Week of 5 to 11 January 2026
On 9 January, the Council of the European Union authorises the signature of the two EU-Mercosur agreement instruments (the interim trade agreement — ITA — and the wider partnership agreement — EMPA), as well as the provisional application of the ITA and certain provisions of the EMPA. This green light comes despite opposition from France and other Member States, the agreement having received the narrowest majority ever recorded at the Council for an agreement of this type.
