The EU-Mercosur agreement is officially signed on 17 January in Asunción (Paraguay), after more than twenty-five years of negotiations. The text creates a free-trade area bringing together more than 700 million consumers, with a trade component (quotas notably on poultry, sugar, rice, ethanol and beef) and a wider partnership including climate commitments and the protection of 344 geographical indications, 63 of them French. On the same day, 17 January, the US President threatens new, strengthened tariffs against several European countries (France, Germany, Denmark, the United Kingdom) in the context of the dispute over Greenland.
