Weekly Digest — International Trade Law (19-25 January 2026)

Week of 19 to 25 January 2026

On 20 January, the European Parliament decides to suspend the ratification process for the EU-US trade agreement concluded the previous summer. On 21 January, in plenary session, MEPs vote by a narrow majority (334 in favour, 324 against, 11 abstentions) to refer to the Court of Justice of the European Union the question of the compatibility of the EU-Mercosur agreement with the European treaties — legal bases, conclusion procedure, rebalancing mechanism. This referral suspends the parliamentary ratification process on the European side; the CJEU’s opinion is then expected within twelve to eighteen months.
